The review

The Flip 5 launched in 2019 and it is still the sixth best-selling portable speaker on Amazon, with 4.8 out of 5 from 85,483 ratings — the highest score of any product on this site and in this whole comparison. Newer, cleverer speakers sit below it in both the ranking and the rating.

Its bullet points are five short phrases totalling about twenty words. No AI sound boost, no ambient lighting, no asterisks. Twelve hours, IPX7, party pairing, done. It is the least oversold listing on this page, and probably not by accident.

Amazon's table, on the other hand, gives it 4.2 audio channels. That would be four speakers and two subwoofers; this is one driver and two passive radiators in a tube. It says the battery takes twelve hours to charge, which is exactly how long it plays — the same error as the JBL Go 4, and the same error as both Sony headphones on the other half of this site. It lists three different driver sizes. It calls the sealed rechargeable pack «1 Lithium Metal batteries required», which would be a battery you cannot recharge.

What you actually get for $89.95 is the best sound-per-dollar in this group, 544 g in a bag, and no strap of any kind. There is also no microphone and no aux input, both of which the cheaper speakers above have.

The good

  • 4.8 from 85,483 ratings — the highest-scored product on this site
  • The best sound of the speakers under $100 here
  • IPX7: full immersion, not just rain
  • 12 hours
  • Still #6 on Amazon seven years after launch
  • PartyBoost pairing with other JBLs
  • Bullet points that promise almost nothing, and deliver it

The not so good

  • «Number of Audio Channels: 4.2» on a single-driver speaker
  • The listing says it takes 12 hours to charge and plays for 12
  • No microphone and no aux input, unlike the $25 speaker above
  • 544 g, and no strap or loop
  • Three different driver sizes on one table
  • $89.95 against $29.98 for the category's number one
  • A 2019 design: no USB-PD fast charge, no app EQ beyond the basics

Other specs

4.8 out of 5 from 85,483 ratingsThe best-scored product on this entire site, and it launched in 2019. Nothing newer here beats it.
«Battery Charge Time: 12 hours»Exactly as long as it plays for. Twelve hours of charging for twelve hours of music. The JBL Go 4 on this site has the same error with 7 and 7, and so do both Sony headphones on the headphone side. It is systemic, not a typo.
«Number of Audio Channels: 4.2»A 4.2 system is four speakers and two subwoofers. This is one driver and two passive radiators, in a tube you hold in one hand.
«Battery Capacity: 3000»No unit. It is 3,000 mAh.
Three driver sizes«Audio Driver Size: 10 centimeters», «Woofer Diameter: 10 centimeters» and «Speaker Size: 16 centimeters». The last one is the length of the speaker.
«Number of Batteries: 1 Lithium Metal batteries required»Lithium metal cells are not rechargeable. This one is lithium-ion and sealed in.
«Input Voltage: 3.6 volts»That is the cell voltage. It charges over USB-C at 5 V.
Five bullet points, twenty words«Wireless Bluetooth streaming. 12 hours of playtime. IPX7 waterproof. Pair multiple speakers with party boost. Premium JBL sound quality.» That is the entire marketing copy for a $90 speaker — the shortest on this site, and the least misleading because of it.

What buyers say

A summary of the reviews published on Amazon.com as of 2026-09-09.

4.8 out of 5 4.8 85,483 ratings

4.8 out of 5 from 85,483 ratings, the highest on this site. Six years of buyers repeating the same two things: it sounds bigger than it looks, and it survives. The complaints are the missing aux input, the absence of a speakerphone, and a run of reports about the battery degrading after heavy use — expected on a design this old.
